SCULPTURE TEMPLE SERIES
Most of my current sculptures are ceramic pieces fired in the Raku tradition. "Raku", in Japanese, means, "delightful, enjoyable". The experience for the artist working in this medium is certainly pure joy, as well as for the viewer of such creations. The pieces are put into a kiln outdoors, fired fairly quickly to approximately 1100 degrees, then pulled from the fire while brilliantly red hot (with tongs, of course!) and placed in a can or pit with saw dust, paper shredding or leaves and pine cones and needles. Once cooled, the results are most spontaneous and surprising. The pieces emerge from the ashes with the effects of oxygen reduction and flashing from the flames and reaction with the glaze metals to create brilliant rainbows of colour, crackles of surface, shiny copper or gold, or blackening in the raw clay areas. These combinations give texture and depth to the piece, which could not be achieved by any other means.

For my sculptures, which are ancient and distressed with marks and meaning, the process of Raku adds to the spirit of the work. My sculptural pieces, whether wall relief or free-standing, are influenced by ancient architecture, doors and windows, mystical passages, hidden rooms, ritual pieces and the tearing down and timelessness of cultures. The original influence began after my journeys through the thousand year old medinas and mountain villages of Morocco. I recognized the power of time and space on the soul and the depth of culture infused in its architecture; the connection between psychic rooms and physical rooms; the destruction and decay of the physical world and the spiritual world. These themes seem to reoccur as my sculptures evolve and expand.
